MIDAS Data

The Motorway Incident Detection and Automated Signalling (or MIDAS) system detects incidents or congestion from loops in the road. These loops automatically sets appropriate VMS messages to warn drivers of conditions of the road ahead, together with the maximum speed advised. The inductive loops are installed in the road surface at nominal 500m intervals. These loops monitor traffic flow and speed in order to detect congestion and formation of queues. Currently, MIDAS is in use on the most heavily trafficked motorways.

Detailed of the location of MIDAS sites, their configuration and specifications for the controlling equipment can be found at the MIDAS INFO web site.

From Halogen online you can get access to traffic counting data (TCD) and MIDAS / Alert operational log files (MAL, MOL, MSL & MFL) for download.
